History of Mackenzie, Missouri

Mackenzie, MO is a small town in northern St. Louis County, in the southern part of the state. Mackenzie is an incorporated city in St. Charles County, Missouri. The population is roughly 134 in the 2020 census. The city has seen its population grow steadily over the years and is now at approximately 515 people. The town was originally settled by French immigrants who worked as farmers. Mackenzie was formed when the St. Charles County government created a new community in an effort to promote commerce in the area. Mackenzie, MO was first known as Mackerel and later became known as Mackie during the late 1800s. During the latter part of the century, the community developed into a major railroad center. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mackie was known for being a major source of iron ore for the United States Army. Mackie was also known for being an agricultural center and a major source of lumber during this period. As far back as the early twentieth century, Mackie was known for a variety of industries including agriculture, manufacturing, wood processing, metal manufacturing, and meatpacking.
